You can sign up for alerts that local officials use to share real-time updates on local emergencies and subscribe to key sources of public information over email or on social media. FEMA also has a mobile app and text service that shares real-time alerts from the National Weather Service, along with emergency safety tips for different types of disasters. Ready.gov is another great resource offering a wealth of free, useful information on how to handle disasters and hazards.

Familiarize Yourself with Evacuation Routes, Shelters, and Public Resources

Knowing your evacuation routes and local shelter locations in advance will help you find safety quicker when you’re in a pinch. Inquire about your community’s emergency response plans with local officials and use this information to guide your own emergency preparations. Chances are your community has a variety of trainings and resources on file for you to use.

Prepare Emergency Supplies

You should keep emergency supplies to sustain you and your family for a minimum of 3 days without power. Consider stocking up on food, water, batteries, first aid, and other emergency equipment.
